Our History
Our company’s history starts in Caifornia. Our Director, Monica Norley, worked for several years managing worker-owned cooperatives in Guatemala and the San Francisco Bay Area. In search of a creative outlet as well as having keen interests in fair trade, organics, the environment, social justice and community economic development, she began making and selling natural soaps and body care products along with partner, Rebecca Strong. Seeing first hand how vital and positive a role fair trade can play in people's lives, the two women decided that adopting a fair trade ethic was a priority for the business. After moving to the UK, Visionary Soap Company was officially formed in May 2005.
Our Company
We not only produce all of our handmade products but we are also involved in every aspect of the business. We always put our vision for the business at the forefront of our decision making, whether that means purchasing the finest organic ingredients at fair trade prices, choosing environmentally-friendly packaging, or donating a percentage of proceeds to a worthy cause.
Our Products
Visionary prides itself on the fact that the products we make are helping people to live healthier lives. Great natural products have been around for centuries but within recent years people around the world have been waking up to the fact that daily contact with harsh chemicals can have serious affects on our bodies. There is a growing awareness surrounding the importance of protecting our environment and promoting sustainability as well. It may seem like a simple bar of soap to many, but lots of thought and concern goes into every one of ours!
We currently produce 14 different varieties of organic soap. We have also developed our own line of luxurious body butters, bath melts, lip balms and body oils. New products are on the horizon...
Our Ingredients & Suppliers
The best thing about our products is that you know exactly what goes into them.We always disclose every ingredient on our packaging and are not interested in operating any other way. Our products never contain synthetic dyes or fragrances, parabens, petroleum-based ingredients nor animal products. All products, in fact, are 100% organic as well as vegan. Being that Visionary Soap Company is first and foremost a fair trade company, we source as many of our ingredients and accessories from fair trade suppliers as possible. For example, our organic olive oil comes from cooperatives in Palestine. We get our organic coconut oil, cocoa butter and shea butter from women's cooperatives in Ghana whenever possible. Fair trade herbs and spices and essential oils are still commodities which are being developed but we have incorporated them wherever possible as well. We currently are able to source some of our herbs and spices from co-ops in Sri Lanka and roughly 25% of our essential oils come from small producers in Madagascar and The Comoros. All of our handmade gift boxes and paper are from worker-owned cooperatives in Nepal and the Philippines. We also source cosmetic bags from polio & landmine disabled groups in Cambodia, sustainably-grown luffas from Thailand, incense from India and soap dishes from Bali. We will soon have crocheted sisal soap bags from women's groups in Madagascar as well.
Our Packaging
We use packaging that is both minimal and recyclable. All of our promotional materials and product labels are either made from recycled paper or are a combination of post-consumer waste and natural plant fibres (i.e. straw, hemp, banana leaf).
